Favorites
Books from this list that have been especially useful or influential:

* Building a Second Brain – Changed how I think about organizing information outside of my brain.
* How to Take Smart Notes – Introduced me to the Zettelkasten approach and the value of connecting notes rather than simply collecting them.
* The Extended Mind – Explores the idea that thinking does not happen exclusively inside the brain and can be supported by our environment, tools, and other people.

Ideas that connect these books
Several recurring ideas appear across these books:

* Externalizing information – Building a Second Brain, How to Take Smart Notes, The Extended Mind, and Getting Things Done all explore ways of moving information out of our heads and into external systems.
* Small actions compound over time – Atomic Habits emphasizes how repeated small behaviors can produce significant long-term changes.
* Goals and action – Goals!, Atomic Habits, and Getting Things Done approach the relationship between desired outcomes and everyday actions from different perspectives.
* Reflection – The New Diary demonstrates how writing can be used not simply to record events but also to think, reflect, and develop ideas.
* Connecting ideas – How to Take Smart Notes and Building a Second Brain emphasize capturing useful information and making it available for future thinking and creation.

Matt: /* Feeding the bees */

This page contains notes about my attempt at indoor beekeeping, which is one of my Hobbies.

Apartment preparation
Before installing the hive:

# Move furniture away from the hive.
# Identify anything in the apartment that I do not want covered with bees.
# Remove those items.
# Close the bedroom door.
# Search apartment rental contract for the word "apiary."
# Practice saying, "That's strange. I've never seen those bees before."

Hive inspections
The hive should be inspected regularly.

Things to check:

* Is the queen present?
* Are there eggs and larvae?
* Is the colony producing honey?
* Are there signs of disease or pests?
* Are the bees preparing to swarm?
* Has the landlord discovered the bees?

The last two conditions require immediate attention.

Feeding the bees
Bees normally forage outdoors for nectar and pollen - this presents certain logistical difficulties on the 25th floor of an apartment building.

Possible solutions I have considered:

* Opening a window.
* Installing a very small revolving door.
* Teaching the bees to use the elevator.
* Planting wildflowers on the roof.

Further research is needed.

Swarm management
A honey bee colony may swarm when a large group of bees leaves with the old queen to establish a new colony. In conventional beekeeping, this is considered an important management issue.

In apartment beekeeping, it is considered a reason to move.

Honey harvest
My goal is to eventually harvest my own honey.

Projected annual honey production:

Item
Estimate
Honey produced
40 pounds
Honey given to friends
15 pounds
Honey I keep
10 pounds
Honey used to apologize to neighbors
15 pounds

These estimates may need to be revised depending on the number of neighbors.

Lessons learned
* Bees require considerably more personal space than anticipated.
* "Open floor plan" has a different meaning when you own bees.
* A studio apartment is not improved by adding 50,000 roommates.
* The phrase "indoor hive inspection" should probably not exist.
* The security deposit should now be considered a sunk cost.
* My neighbors have become surprisingly interested in moving.
* The beekeeper controls the hive. The bees control everything else.

Long-term goals
* Successfully overwinter the hive.
* Find an apartment with a balcony.

If food safety is uncertain after a prolonged outage, follow current government food-safety guidance rather than relying on appearance or smell alone.

Important Documents
Keep secure copies of important documents where they can be accessed following an emergency.

Examples:

* Personal identification documents
* Insurance policies
* Home or renter's insurance information
* Vehicle insurance
* Emergency contacts
* Medical information
* Property inventory
* Important financial contact information
* Pet information
* Lease, mortgage, or property records

Emergency Cash
Keep a modest amount of cash available because electronic payment systems and ATMs may be unavailable during an extended outage.

Include some smaller denominations.

Tips for managing stress

Matt:

This page contains ideas for recognizing and managing my Personal stress and a place to record strategies that work well for me. In addition to managing my stress level, I also take Vitamins and supplements, try to follow my Tips for healthy eating.

Recognizing stress
Stress can affect people in different ways. Possible signs include:

* Difficulty concentrating
* Feeling overwhelmed
* Irritability
* Trouble sleeping
* Changes in appetite
* Headaches or muscle tension
* Feeling tired
* Procrastinating or avoiding responsibilities
* Difficulty relaxing
* Worrying repeatedly about the same things

Recognizing stress early can make it easier to do something about it.

When I feel overwhelmed
Things I can try immediately:

# Stop and identify what is actually causing the stress.
# Write down the things I am worried about instead of trying to keep track of everything in my head.
# Decide which things require action now and which can wait.
# Choose one small next action.
# Take a short break if I have been working for a long time.
# Go for a walk or get some physical activity.
# Talk with someone I trust.
# Remind myself that I do not need to solve every problem at once.

Reduce uncertainty
Sometimes stress comes from not knowing what needs to happen next.

Things that may help:

* Make a list of unfinished tasks.
* Put important dates on my calendar.
* Break large assignments or projects into smaller tasks.
* Identify the next action rather than thinking about the entire project.
* Prepare for important events in advance.
* Ask questions when I don't understand an assignment or expectation.
* Deal with small problems before they become larger ones.

Take care of the basics
Basic routines can affect how well I handle stress.

Sleep
* Try to maintain a reasonably consistent sleep schedule.
* Allow enough time for sleep.
* Avoid routinely leaving important work until late at night.
* Give myself some time to wind down before going to bed.

Physical activity
Regular physical activity can be a useful way to manage stress.

Ideas include:

* Walking
* Running
* Cycling
* Sports
* Strength training
* Hiking
* Stretching

The activity does not have to be intense to provide a useful break from a stressful situation.

Eating
* Eat regular meals.
* Keep convenient healthy foods available.
* Drink enough water.
* Avoid relying on large amounts of caffeine when tired or stressed.

See Tips for healthy eating.

Take intentional breaks
A break is most useful when it actually gives my attention a chance to shift.

Possible breaks:

* Take a short walk.
* Go outside.
* Listen to music.
* Stretch.
* Read something unrelated to work or school.
* Spend time with a pet.
* Talk with a friend.
* Work on a hobby.
* Sit somewhere quiet for a few minutes.

Scrolling through social media for 30 minutes may feel like a break without necessarily leaving me feeling rested.

Relaxation techniques
Different techniques work for different people.

Slow breathing
Try slowing down my breathing for a few minutes and paying attention to each breath.

Progressive muscle relaxation
Gradually tense and then relax different muscle groups, paying attention to the difference between tension and relaxation.

Mindfulness
Spend a few minutes focusing attention on what I am experiencing right now rather than repeatedly thinking about what might happen later.

Preventing avoidable stress
Some stressful situations cannot be avoided, but others can be reduced through preparation.

* Don't wait until the last minute to begin large assignments.
* Keep my calendar up to date.
* Prepare what I need the night before an important day.
* Leave extra time when traveling somewhere important.
* Keep frequently needed things in predictable places.
* Avoid committing to more things than I realistically have time to do.
* Address uncomfortable conversations rather than indefinitely avoiding them.

Things that help me manage stress
This section is for strategies I have discovered work particularly well for me.

* Going for a walk helps me think more clearly.
* Writing down everything I need to do makes a busy week feel more manageable.
* Starting a difficult task for just ten minutes often makes it easier to continue.
* I feel less stressed in the morning when I prepare the night before.
* Talking about a problem with someone I trust often helps me see it differently.
* Cleaning my desk helps when my surroundings start to feel chaotic.

Things that tend to increase my stress
* Not getting enough sleep
* Procrastinating on something I know I need to do
* Having too many unfinished tasks in my head
* Spending too much time reading upsetting news
* Agreeing to things without checking my calendar
* Trying to solve several problems at the same time

General principles
* Have a plan for what you will eat each day. When decisions are made last minute, there are fewer healthy options available.
* Eat a variety of foods rather than relying heavily on a small number of foods.
* Include vegetables and fruits regularly.
* Choose whole grains more often than highly refined grains.
* Include healthy sources of protein such as beans, lentils, fish, poultry, nuts, seeds, eggs, and other appropriate foods.
* Limit foods that are high in added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat.
* Pay attention to portion sizes, particularly with calorie-dense foods.
* Drink water regularly.
* Try to make healthy eating a sustainable routine rather than relying on short-term restrictive diets.

Fruits and vegetables
* Include different types and colors of vegetables.
* Keep fruit available for convenient snacks.
* Frozen fruits and vegetables can be nutritious and convenient alternatives to fresh produce.
* Look for ways to add vegetables to foods I already eat.
* When possible, choose whole fruit rather than fruit juice.

Drinks
Water is a good default beverage.

Other choices can include:

* Unsweetened tea
* Coffee without large amounts of added sugar
* Milk or appropriate alternatives

Limit frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.

Healthy snacking ideas
* Fruit
* Vegetables with hummus
* Unsalted or lightly salted nuts
* Yogurt
* Whole-grain crackers
* Air-popped popcorn
* Apple with peanut butter
* Hard-boiled egg

Grocery shopping
* Make a shopping list before going to the store.
* Avoid shopping while extremely hungry.
* Keep easy-to-prepare healthy foods at home.
* Compare Nutrition Facts labels between similar products.
* Check serving sizes when comparing labels.
* Keep frozen vegetables available for days when there is little time to cook.
* Buy healthy foods that I actually enjoy eating rather than foods I think I "should" eat but consistently avoid.

Eating away from home
* Look at the menu before arriving when practical.
* Consider portion size when ordering.
* Choose vegetables or fruit as a side when available.
* Ask for sauces or dressings on the side when useful.
* Don't assume that foods described as "healthy" are necessarily low in sodium, sugar, or calories.
* Enjoy occasional treats without treating one meal as having ruined an otherwise healthy eating pattern.

Meal ideas
Breakfast
* Oatmeal with fruit and nuts
* Eggs with whole-grain toast and fruit
* Plain yogurt with fruit and nuts

Lunch
* Salad with chicken, beans, or another protein
* Whole-grain sandwich with vegetables and fruit
* Leftovers from a healthy dinner

Dinner
A simple approach is to build a meal around:

* Vegetables
* A source of protein
* A whole grain or other appropriate carbohydrate

Examples:

* Salmon, roasted vegetables, and brown rice
* Chicken, vegetables, and a baked sweet potato
* Bean chili with vegetables
* Whole-grain pasta with vegetables and a protein

Things that help me eat well
This section is for lessons I discover about my own eating habits.

* I make better choices when I have healthy food available at home.
* Preparing some food in advance makes healthy meals easier during busy days.
* Having a few simple meals I know how to prepare is more useful than collecting complicated recipes.
* If healthy snacks are convenient, I am less likely to choose something simply because it is easy.
* A sustainable eating pattern works better than trying to eat perfectly.

Things I want to try
* Learn several simple vegetable recipes.
* Eat a greater variety of vegetables.
* Try a new healthy recipe each month.
* Find healthier alternatives for some foods I eat frequently.
* Learn more about reading nutrition labels.

Complete the introductory Python course I started.

This month's priorities
The goals I especially want to make progress on this month are:

# Improve my biology grade.
# Exercise consistently.
# Finish my current book.
# Complete the first section of my Python course.

Goals I am considering
These are goals I might pursue, but I have not committed to them yet.

* Join a school club.
* Improve my Spanish vocabulary.
* Organize the photos on my phone.

Recently completed goals
Goal
Completed
What I learned
Organize my desk and study area
August 2026
It is easier to start homework when my desk is already clear.
Read a book during summer vacation
August 2026
Reading for a short time every evening worked better than trying to read for several hours at once.
Update my résumé
July 2026
Keeping a list of activities and accomplishments makes updating my résumé much easier.

Breaking down a goal
A goal becomes easier to work toward when I identify specific actions I can take.

Example goal: Run a 5K without stopping

# Find a beginner 5K training plan.
# Choose three days each week for running.
# Record the distance I can currently run.
# Gradually increase my running time.
# Register for a local 5K.
# Complete the race.

The goal is the outcome I want to achieve. The items above are tasks that help me achieve it.

Questions to ask when setting a goal
* What specifically do I want to accomplish?
* Why is this important to me?
* How will I know when I have accomplished it?
* When would I like to accomplish it?
* What is the next action I can take?
* Is the goal challenging but realistic?
* Does it support one of my Long-term goals?

This page contains note about my Personal habits.<blockquote>Habits reduce cognitive load and free up mental capacity, so you can allocate your attention to other tasks… It’s only by making the fundamentals of life easier that you can create the mental space needed for free thinking and creativity. - James Clear, author of Atomic Habits </blockquote>

Habits (actual and aspirational)
* Write down the habits I am trying to establish and those I am trying to avoid
* I will have a keyboard in front of me whenever I am learning.
* Thirty minutes of exercise four days per week
* Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day
* Make my bed each morning

What helps me maintain a habit
* Start with a goal small enough that it is easy to do consistently.
* Attach a new habit to something I already do.
* Decide in advance when and where I will do it.
* Keep things I need for the habit easy to access.
* Missing one day does not mean I should abandon the habit.
* Review habits occasionally and decide whether they are still useful.

Things I have learned about myself
* I am more likely to exercise when I decide what I am going to do before the day begins.
* Goals that are too ambitious are harder for me to maintain.
* Keeping a book next to my bed makes me much more likely to read.
* A checklist is useful when establishing a habit, but once something becomes automatic I don't need to keep tracking it.
* If I do something two days in a row, I am already on track toward building a habit.
* If I skip performing a habit two days in a row, I am have already begun a new habit of skipping that habit.
